The first week of school isn't the warm-up. It's the highest-leverage instructional time on your calendar.
Every educator has lived both versions of September. In one, the class finds its rhythm by Friday and the year hums. In the other, small battles take root — and get fought daily until June.
The difference is rarely the students. It's what got taught in the first five days. Not the syllabus — the behavior. The first week is when students are quietly asking three questions: What's actually expected here? What happens when someone pushes? Is this adult calm and consistent, or reactive? Answer those on purpose and the year belongs to you.
List every routine your classroom depends on: entering, starting work, transitions, asking for help, what materials come out when, how the class ends. Now teach each one the way you'd teach content: model it, practice it, give feedback, practice again. Yes, practice — even with high schoolers. Especially with high schoolers.
This feels like “losing” instructional days. It's the opposite. A routine taught to automaticity in August pays you back ten minutes a day for 180 days — that's weeks of instruction reclaimed. The schools that skip this spend those same days anyway, one confrontation at a time.
Sometime in week one, a student will test — a refusal, a smart remark, a “make me.” That moment is not an interruption of your first week; it is your first week. The whole room is watching to see what happens.
Have your response rehearsed: the pause, the calm one-line diffuser, the brief refocus if it's needed, and back to teaching. No lecture, no theater, no referral. You'll have answered question two and three in a single stroke: pushing doesn't produce drama here, and this adult doesn't rattle. One classroom doing this well has a good year. A whole building doing it — same expectations taught, same calm responses, same language from every adult — changes the school. When Jack G. Desmond Middle School in Madera trained their entire staff before opening, the principal reported something I'll never forget: teachers told him it was “the best first week of school they have ever experienced — ever.” The whole first week produced three lunch detentions. The board publicly recognized the turnaround.
That's not a miracle. That's front-loading, done by every adult at once.
Here's the secret veteran educators know: you can re-run the first week any Monday you choose. After every long break — or the week you decide things must change — re-teach the routines from zero, reset your responses, and hold the calm. Mid-year turnarounds are real: one high school cut in-house suspensions from 275 in October to 57 by May.
The first week is a gift. But the system behind it is the real prize — and it's trainable, for your newest hire and your whole staff alike.
Day 1: Teach the two routines that shape everything — entering the room and getting to work. Practice both twice. Learn names ferociously; nothing manages behavior like being known.
Day 2: Add transitions and voice levels. Re-run yesterday's routines cold — the re-run is the teaching.
Day 3: Teach what help looks like (how to ask, what to do while waiting) and introduce your calm response sequence by describing it: “If I ever need to redirect you, here's exactly what it will look like.” Predictability strips drama before it starts.
Day 4: First genuinely rigorous academic work — run inside the routines you've built, so students feel the system carrying real weight.
Day 5: Re-teach the weakest routine of the week without frustration; finish with the class experiencing itself succeeding. That feeling is the culture you'll live in until June.
Protect the first week from your master calendar. Every assembly, schedule change, and interruption you allow in week one bills you for the rest of the year. And if you want the Desmond effect — a whole building opening in sync — the training has to happen before the students arrive, not as an October repair job. August training is a launch; October training is a rescue. Both work. One is cheaper.
Nothing you teach in September is more valuable than how your classroom runs — because every lesson for the next nine months rides on it. Front-load the routines, rehearse your calm, and treat the first test from a student as the opportunity it is. And if you lead a building: give your whole staff the same playbook before the buses arrive. The schools that do don't just survive the first week — they report the best one they've ever had.
